The collection consists of Sam McClain's personal papers and files concerning his artwork. The collection consists of biographical materials, training and employment records, volunteer service records, and various art related files. The bulk of the collection consists of art related place name files for 135 different localities. These files contain photographs and negatives, photo post cards, color slides, original pen and ink and pencil drawings, sketches, photocopies of his watercolors of Russian Orthodox churches, newspaper and magazine clippings, publications, correspondence, and other art related materials. Most of these files concern Russian Orthodox churches in Alaska, while others relate to other historical structures in Anchorage, around Alaska, and in McClain's home town of San Angelo, Texas. Other materials in the collection include art prints and notecards, Christmas greeting cards, photographs, color slides, color photo post cards, and several original watercolors.

Sam McClain was born in San Angelo, Texas. He came to Alaska in the late 1940s and worked as an architect for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District Office, in Anchorage from 1949 until his retirement in 1979. He married Christine Ferrari Reeder in Anchorage in 1950. McClain was an artist, specializing in pen and ink drawing and water colors. He studied under watercolor artist Rex Brandt and Robert E.
